Protecting Against Radon - Washougal, WA
Challenge
The owner of this property wanted to have their home inspected for Radon. They understood that in certain zip codes, the Radon PCI level can be very high and toxic to breathe in. They reached out to John's Waterproofing about seeing if a mitigation system would be beneficial for their home and protect its occupants.
Solution
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the soil. It usually occurs as rock minerals break down into the soil. Because it comes from the soil beneath your home, it is able to travel through cracks and crevices and get into the living spaces where people breathe the Radon gas in. It's important to test the area your home is in because Radon levels vary depending on location. If the test shows 4.0/PCI levels or higher, then that indicates there is a high risk of Radon gas and a mitigation system is necessary. When we install a mitigation system, we usually start in the lowest point of the home, like the basement or crawl space, and dig a hole to be a suction point. This is for the interior PVC pipe to be inserted so that the gas beneath the home can be redirected to the system's fan. We attach the fan on the outside of the house. This fan is capable of pulling the radon out of the home and sending it up over the homes roofline and away from its foundation by depressurizing the soil beneath and redirecting the passage of the gas. After the system is installed, we seal any cracks so that the gas can't reenter into the home and homeowners can enjoy their homes without the risk of breathing in Radon.
