These homeowners had a surprise when the rainy season hit and their newly purchased home had a big leak. It was discovered that the exterior basement door was not waterproofed. All of the rain would collect at the base of the stairs and creep through the porous concrete and into their basement. To combat this issue before it damaged their personal property or their home any further they knew they had to take action.
In this Technical Paper we will focus on the importance of installing a trench drain to combat the water flow that can often be seen in exterior doorways, garage door openings, and stairways.
Throughout a basement, to waterproof, we will dig a trench and lay down and cover a pipe to divert water to a SumpPump to create a flow of water out and away from the home, but when it comes to large scales of water coming in, the solution requires a set up that can allow more water to drain and move at quicker rates. For this reason we use our TrenchDrain product which resembles half of a piping system but with a grate fit snugly on top. This will then be laid flush or slightly lower than the flooring around it to catch the water.
Had a normal, fully covered pipe been laid in this doorway, it would have caught the water that was seeping through the concrete, but that puddling issue would have persisted as the water slowly penetrated the concrete and made its way to the pipes. Our TrenchDrain will stop the water at the grate and keep it from going further into the home.
