Mapleton, OR Crawl Space Leaking Cold Air into the Home
Challenge
This homeowner was concerned about how to save on energy costs in his home and he sought help from John's Waterproofing to solve this problem. Our team informed him of the dangers of using fiberglass insulation which was an extremely common form of insulation used in many crawlspaces. Today we know that fiberglass performs poorly when compared to newer forms of insulation. Fiberglass has been know to soak in and hold moisture to the point where you can see water droplets forming on the outside of it, leading to a wet crawl space floor and ineffective insulation. Moisture problems such as this can lead to mold and mildew growth as well as odors coming in from the crawlspace into the first floor of the house.
Solution
Our crews came in and removed the old, ineffective fiberglass insulation and replaced it with spray foam insulation. Spray Foam insulation is becoming increasingly popular due to the fact that it is extremely efficient and actually saves money on energy costs. It is closed celled which means that it won't absorb moisture along with a high R-value, meaning that it has a higher resistance to heat flow. It also adds strength to the building structure, making it more permanent and preventing sagging or joists.
