Severe Weather Alert Issued
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
STAY SAFE
This afternoon a Severe Weather Warning was put into effect in the Greater Portland metro area. We here at John's want to make sure you and your family are safe. Here are some tips from us here at John's and the American Red Cross.
- Make sure the vents to their crawlspaces are covered (if not encapsulated)
- Make sure your sump pumps are working effectively and serviced as needed
- Make sure electronics are fully charged and functional in case of an outage
- Help your home's insulation by covering windows with plastic from the inside
- Winterize your vehicle and keep your gas tank full, a full tank helps keep fuel lines from freezing
- Keep cupboards under the sink in kitchen and bathroom open so they are exposed to heat. If you have active freezing conditions at your home, keep your water on at a trickle in order to prevent pipes freezing
- Bring pet indoors and move livestock to sheltered areas.
- Avoid driving needlessly in harsh or icy conditions, group trips if you have to go
- Leave heaters running at a constant temperature in the home to help save from spikes in your electricity bills
- Use a textured material such as sand, rock salt, non-clumping kitty litter and such to prevent slipping hazards in walkways, stairs, and driveways
- Dress appropriately for the weather and prepare for weather changes when you are out of the home
We want all of our customers to be safe so make sure your phone is charged and ready with a list of emergency numbers on hand and try not to leave your home if not necessary. A good way to do that is to make sure you have enough food and extra water for the weekend. Flashlights, batteries, and candles would be good to have on hand as well. And let's not forget a few board games for some indoor family fun!
